Cannes Film Festival: 7 Crazy Stunts That Rocked The French Event

It’s that time of year again when the cream of the A-list crop descend on a sun-drenched town in the south of France for the annual Cannes Film Festival.
And while everyone would have you believe it’s all about the artistry of the films being premiered and the glitzy red carpets, what most of us are all excited for is the chaos and controversies that will undoubtedly ensue.
Since the glitzy event began way back in the 1930s, the festival has seen its fair share of WTF? moments - can you remember any of these?
  • Psy impersonator proves to be the ultimate blagger
34-year-old South Korean business consultant Denis Carré took the festival by storm back in 2013, but you’d be forgiven for not recognising the name. That’s because he fooled practically everyone in Cannes into believing he was ‘Gangnam Style’ singer Psy. Denis blagged his way into exclusive A-list bashes and even cosied up for photos with celebs including Naomi Harris after dressing up as Psy. But his cover was blown by the man himself after he saw a picture of Fake Psy at the festival. "Seems like there's another ME at cannes," Psy tweeted, revealing he was working halfway across the world in Singapore.

Believe it or not the world was first introduced to the concept of a mankini at the festival back in 2006 when Sacha Baron Cohen held a photocall to promote his film ‘Borat’ when he came dressed in the uncomfortable piece of swimwear.
  • America Ferrera ambushed on the red carpet

Ugly Betty’ star America Ferrera became another victim of notorious celeb pranker Vitalii Sediuk at last year’s festival. As she posed for pictures on the red carpet with her ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ co-stars, he stormed across the barriers and stuck his head up America’s billowing white dress. The actress was left shocked and embarrassed by the prank which she later described as “violating”.

One unfortunate festival goer redefined the term ‘taking a tumble’ at the 2011 event when he took an almighty fall down the stairs of the Palais des festivals in front of the world’s media. Ouch indeed.
  • Simone Silva told to put ‘em away

B-list movie star Simone Silva raised a fair few eyebrows back in 1954 when she posed topless on the beach with actor and singer Robert Mitchum. Her naked antics landed her in hot water when she was later asked to leave the festival.
  • Lars Von Trier makes massive Nazi gaffe

Danish director Lars Von Trier found himself banned from the festival following 2011’s event after he made some pretty awkward jokes about the Nazis. Speaking at the premiere of his film ‘Melancholia’, he announced “I’m a Nazi”, before adding that he “understands Hitler” after a reporter questioned his German roots. Understandably his comments sparked outrage and he was forced to apologise.
  • Pigeon fight!
There were bizarre scenes at the 2001 festival when the cast of Madchester biopic ‘24 Hour Party People’ brought some Happy Mondays madness to the beach. The four actors who played the 90s band had brought a suitcase full of dead pigeons with them to recreate this scene from the film, and proceeded to attack each other with the dead birds, as you do. Needless to say, event organisers soon ejected them from the beach.
